What is VAT Registration?
VAT (Value-Added Tax) registration is the process of enrolling your business with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to collect and pay VAT on taxable goods and services. If your business’s total taxable turnover exceeds R2.3 million in any consecutive 12-month period, VAT registration is compulsory. Voluntary registration is also available for businesses with a turnover above R50,000.
- Legal Requirement: It is a legal requirement for businesses to register for VAT if they exceed the R2.3 million turnover threshold.
- Avoid Penalties: Operating without the correct VAT registration can lead to significant penalties and interest from SARS.
- Business Credibility & Growth: A VAT number enhances your company’s credibility with clients and suppliers and allows your business to claim back VAT on expenses, improving cash flow.
